Custom Cover Design
Everyone judges a book by its cover. It’s the first thing your potential reader sees, and their reaction to it almost always determines whether they’ll stick around to read your carefully-crafted blurb. Unfair as it may seem, an obviously homemade cover signals to a reader that the contents of the book may also be low quality. Conversely, a striking, professional cover can draw in readers who might otherwise have overlooked your book.
An Amazon shopper sees a book cover for a fraction of a second before they look away… unless it catches their eye.
Your cover is your #1 marketing tool. Invest in it!

- I do not design erotic or suggestive covers. I also cannot design covers for books that are explicit in nature, such as books with frequent graphic sexual material. If you have any questions about whether your book falls into this category, please don’t hesitate to contact me!
- I reserve the right to decline to design a cover for any book without stating a reason.
- I don’t format children’s picture books.
- I reserve the right to post your cover and up to three non-consecutive formatted pages from your book on my site and/or social media platforms as part of my portfolio.
- I don’t provide source files.
- I will store the final source file in my archives for two years, during which time I can be contacted to request further revisions. After this amount of time, I cannot guarantee the possibility of revisions as I may delete the files to create storage space.
Timeline & Delivery

You’ll receive initial cover concepts within about 2 weeks of your start date, after which you’ll select one and we will make any changes you want. When the cover is more or less final, we’ll begin the typesetting process. You’ll typically receive the final files within 4-6 weeks, depending on the number of revisions that are required, unless the process drags out for some reason with mutual agreement.
I recommend giving yourself plenty of buffer time with your release date as unforeseen circumstances can always occur to delay the design process.
If you’re in a hurry, there is a rush fee of $100 for delivery in 3 weeks. Be sure to note this in your initial inquiry, and know that I may or may not be able to accommodate. If you want a faster turnaround than 3 weeks, the rush fee will be higher; please contact me to discuss.

I offer unlimited revisions within reason during the design process, prior to delivery of final print-ready files.
What does “within reason” mean? For example, on the first draft you might request some big picture changes. Over the next two or three drafts, you may raise a number of lower-level issues that you notice at that time. However, if the process drags out into draft after draft, each one with only one or two tiny changes, this would leave the realm of “within reason”. To avoid this, I recommend taking your time responding to each draft, sleeping on it, and responding with a full list of changes that are required so we can complete the process in as few drafts as possible.
After you’ve paid the final invoice and I’ve delivered your final print-ready files, I offer three further free revisions. For example, maybe when you order a proof from your printer, you notice some typos, colours are off, or the page count needs to change (thus changing the spine width). Each revised set of delivered files counts as one of the free revisions, so again, be sure to raise all required changes at once!
After the three free revisions, further revisions will be charged at an hourly rate.
Large-scale revisions do not count towards the three free revisions; they will immediately incur an hourly rate.
Typesetting
You’ve got your stunning cover design—why not stop there and just throw together the interior in your word processor? Because the outside isn’t enough; the inside needs to be perfect too.
Formatting errors like jagged edges, too-small margins, and wonky line spacing make a book hard to read. And little details like custom chapter headers and pretty fonts enhance the reading experience more than we might think.
Not to mention, learning the technical requirements for different self-publishing platforms can be overwhelming. I’m already familiar with what your files need to get approved!

The prices quoted above assume that your book is text-based, typically a novel or image-light non-fiction book. As such, it can contain up to 5 images. If your book includes more than 5 images (including but not limited to photos, tables, and illustrations), they will be charged at an additional $1 per image. Please note that my specialty is in text-based books, so if your book is particularly image-heavy, I may not be your best bet!

What my clients have to say…

From the very beginning, Kairos Book Design was a joy to work with. I had started to lose hope of finding someone to collaborate with for my debut novel, but when I began to communicate with Benita, I knew I had found exactly what I needed. Benita went above and beyond to create a beautiful cover for me, as well as meticulous interior formatting. I could not be happier with how everything turned out. Her service was exceptional and I never had to worry about the timeline. If you are looking for an excellent book design service, look no further than Kairos.
—Charisa Norris, author of Shinju and the Master of Tides

Benita did my covers justice. I had a tall order of doing three covers all at once, with multiple formats. Being an Indie Author is not for the faint of heart. I have a lot on my plate, and working with Kairos Book Design & Editing made getting the covers done smooth. Not only were they delivered in a timely manner, the designer did an amazing job of listening to what I wanted and also helping me through the sticky points. They are stunning and I’m so eager to share them with the world! Thanks, Benita!
—T.J. Fisher, author of The Broken Realms Chronicle
As a consultant, Benita Thompson brings a wealth of knowledge about the ins and outs of indie publishing. What can you expect? Prompt, thorough explanations to your dozens of questions; experienced expert advice to help you make the best publishing decisions for your work. It’s been a pleasure to work with Benita Thompson of Kairos Book Design & Editing.
—Gwen Adams, PhD, playwright at bardstreet.com
I am so grateful we hired Benita to do a complete design package for our book project. We are thrilled with the services she provided and we absolutely love the beautiful cover she designed for us! She was responsive, patient, very professional and fantastic to work with! I highly recommend her and we look forward to working with Benita on future projects!
—Dr. Bobby Luv, RLM
