Welcome to Kairos Book Design and Editing! We are two Canadian freelancers who offer affordable services to authors looking to self-publish. We love what we do and enjoy working with amazing indie authors to produce an end result that they love too.

Benita Thompson
Designer
Benita is a self-starter with a passion for beautiful books. She has self-published several of her own books and understands the intricacies of preparing a manuscript for publishing. Benita has been working in book design since 2016, has worked with Realm Award nominees, and is lead formatter/co-cover designer for Story-weaver Publishing. She was book design instructor for Fiat Self-Publishing Academy from 2022-2025. Her favourite kind of day is cozily working on a design project during a storm. She also loves flowers, Dutch food, and chipping away at her novel-in-progress.
As a broke high schooler, I had a budget of zero when I decided I wanted to see my Lord of the Rings-inspired fantasy novel in print. As a result, hiring a designer was out of the question (and to be honest, I didn’t even know I ought to). Instead, I took to Paint and OpenOffice to create my own cover and interior.
That was years ago, and I’ve come a long way from that first cover I designed using nearly-unreadable text overtop a friend’s (gorgeous) painting. As I participated in the online self-publishing community, I came to understand how crucial an excellent book design is to look legitimate as an indie author. I developed my design skills with the subsequent books I published, eventually beginning to experiment—just for fun—in designing book covers for imaginary books. I quickly realised that book design, at least as much as writing, is my most rewarding creative outlet!
After several months of designing for fun, I wanted two things. First, I wanted to be designing real books, not imaginary ones. Second, I wanted to provide support for other indie authors, especially those who might be self-publishing for the first time. In 2016 I began offering cover design and formatting on Fiverr before eventually moving to my own website, and I am so glad I made that decision. Working on real projects allows me to provide authors with a little support as they navigate publishing, as well as meaning that I get to see their gorgeous books in print!
For me, nothing is so rewarding as creating a magical design for a book into which an author has poured so much effort and love. Designing is truly a joy for me, and I’d be absolutely honoured to collaborate with you in bringing your book to print.
Sincerely,
Benita
My Book Design Wishlist
I’m currently especially interested in designing for historical fantasy!
If you’ve written a book that is or has any of the following…
fairy tale vibes
magical
whimsical
lush
light/low fantasy
dystopian
my cover needs lots of lights & sparkles
…I’d adore designing your perfect book!
